About GIMAC

Advancing gender equality in Africa through collective action and policy engagement since 2003.

Our Vision

An Africa where gender equality and women's and girls' empowerment are fully entrenched, promoted, supported, and implemented in every State and institution.

Our Mission

To create a platform for the promotion of gender equality, the protection of women's and girls' rights, and the participation of women in all decision-making processes through engagement with state actors and the African Union.

Who We Are

Comprising about 55 national and international organizations, the GIMAC Network creates a space for civil society to monitor the implementation of the Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa (SDGEA).

The adoption of the SDGEA during the third ordinary session of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government in July 2004 was a landmark achievement in the history of women's rights and gender equality in Africa.

GIMAC's advocacy efforts are guided by the SDGEA, the Parity Principle, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol), and the AU Agenda 2063.

What We Do

Pre-Summit Engagement

The Civil Society meeting under the aegis of GIMAC meets ahead of each African Union Summit to engage AU Member States on African women's rights, issues, and concerns. The platform provides civil society organizations a channel to contribute to AU policy processes.

Policy Advocacy

The strategy of the GIMAC is to use its extensive outreach capacity and network to ensure that the GIMAC Network recommendations are included in the outcome documents of African Union Summit meetings and within individual Member States.

Gender Advocacy Campaigns

Creating gender advocacy campaigns focusing on various aspects and themes of the Solemn Declaration, and enhancing policy-level efforts towards the integration of gender into national processes.

Youth Leadership

Through the GIMAC Young Women Network (GYWN), we accelerate progress towards the inclusion of women and girls at the decision-making level through advocacy using evidence-based research and training programs.
